One of Florida’s Historic Nature Routes
What began as important land for local businesses helped shape the Punta Gorda community without sacrificing the natural beauty around it. The McAdow and Babcock families were early settlers at Babcock Ranch, with the Babcock family establishing the famous cattle ranch where farm animals began sharing nature trails with Florida’s abundant wildlife. Many of the trails visitors explore today—whether on a swamp buggy eco-tour or free walking tour—have been used for decades by ranchers and animals alike.
Wildlife That Has Called Babcock Ranch Home for Centuries
Before the Babcock Ranch Eco-Tours began, the trails, wetlands, and forests were home to many of the same animals you can see today. From migrating birds to apex predators, this fascinating part of Southwest Florida has a long history of being one of the most biodiverse areas in the state. Wildlife that has lived in the region for centuries includes:
- Alligators.
- Bobcats.
- Foxes.
- Panthers.
- Deer.
- Egrets.
Along with the many species you can still see today, this area was also home to some surprising wildlife that is sadly no longer found here. These included black wolves, elk, and the Carolina parakeet.
